2005
Kentucky Health Care Foundation
Scholarship Recipients
"Striving for Success"
Since
1989 the Kentucky Association of Health Care Facilities has awarded
scholarships to deserving employees in the long- term care profession
based on their academic achievements and commitment to quality
care. These scholarships are fully funded by the contributions
made to the Kentucky Health Care Foundation (KHCF).
Once
again due to the generous contributions of our supporters, the
Foundation board was able to award $1,500 per recipient. The scholarships
were presented at KAHCF's Awards Banquet. We are pleased to recognize
our 2005 Kentucky Health Care Foundation Scholarship winners,
and we commend them for their dedication to serving Kentucky's
frail and elderly citizens.
Anna
Caldwell, LPN
According to
Anna’s scholarship application, for years it has been her
dream to complete a nursing program for Registered Nurses. Being
a mother of two daughters, Anna would like to show them that no
dream is impossible at any age.

Anna has worked
in long-term care for eighteen years. She has been employed by
Wolfe County Health Care located in Campton, Kentucky for fourteen
years.
“I
was shocked. Considering that people from all the state were applying
for this scholarship, I thought there was no way I would get that,”
said Anna about receiving the scholarship.
Anna went
on to say that her Administrator and her co-workers treated her
like she was a princess. Her Administrator bought her a bouquet
of flowers at the convention.
Anna is scheduled
to graduate in May from Big Sandy Community and Technical College
in Prestonsburg. She is pursing an Associates Degree as a Registered
Nurse.
Jennifer
Gearlds, CNT & CMT
Jennifer is
a CNT and CMT at Barren County Health Care Center where she has
been employed since July 2001. She has always dreamed of being
a nurse. She is currently enrolled in the nursing program at Western
Kentucky University. Jennifer is scheduled to graduate in May.
As a future nurse, she is looking forward to working in a field
where she is really needed.

“Patiently
feeding a lady with Alzheimer’s, administering medication
to a Parkinson’s patient, and meeting special geriatric
needs are skills that this young lady completes daily with great
enthusiasm,” stated Administrator, Steve Brown in his recommendation
letter to the scholarship committee.
Since working
with the residents at Barren County Health Care Center, Jennifer
has fallen in love with the long-term care industry and plans
to continue working in this field.
Katrina
Lea Ramey
Over the past
seven years Katrina has worked in the Dietary Department at J.J.
Jordan Geriatric Center in Louisa, Her desire to become a Registered
Nurse has grown. Katrina finds working with the elderly very rewarding
and hopes by furthering her education she will be able to make
a difference in the quality of life for the residents.

In his recommendation
letter to the nominating committee Administrator David McKenzie
writes, “More than an economic benefit, Katrina is looking
for a way to better serve the residents’ needs here at the
facility. She believes she has the ability and the skills to be
a part of our “dream team” of nurses.”
Upon completing
her degree Katrina plans to continue working at J.J. Jordan as
a Registered Nurse. Katrina expects to finish the program within
the next three years.

Thanks
to all KHCF Supporters
During the Kentucky Association of Health
Care Facilities’ 2005 Annual Meeting in November,
the Kentucky Health Care Foundation (KHCF) hosted their
annual silent auction fundraiser, held in conjunction with
the annual meeting. Over 65 items were auctioned at the
event, including paintings, gift certificates, theme baskets,
golf equipment and a variety of packages. Over $5,000 was
raised through this event, with all proceeds going directly
to the Foundation’s Scholarship Fund. The Board of
KHCF would like to extend their thanks to everyone who made
the auction a success, including those who donated items,
as well as those who entered bids.
