Description
This two day training course was developed in response to a need voiced by practicing Social Workers and Social Work Designees in nursing homes. This seminar takes professionals a step further in social work practice for the elderly in nursing facilities, and goes beyond the “basics.” Dealing with families; case-mix reimbursement issues; ethical dilemmas and decisions affecting resident care and social work practice; quality indicators/quality measures; management, staffing and budgetary constraints; and defensive documentation/legal aspects are just a few of the areas that will be addressed in the advanced course.

* How to deal with ethical dilemmas with the elderly in long term care facilities (participants will role play & utilize group analysis in regard to specific resident case scenarios)
* How to provide end of life support services for residents (palliative care)

* How to deal with residents with challenging behaviors
* How to train facility staff regarding challenging behaviors
* How to utilize all facility staff in meeting the psychosocial needs of residents

Presenter Catherine R. “Cat” Selman, BS, ACC, a consultant in her business, The Healthcare Communicators, Inc., is a well trained professional in the health care field with over 25 years experience. Ms. Selman received her BS Degree from Trevecca College and has completed graduate work at the University of Southern Mississippi. She served as Corporate Activity and Social Work Consultant for 101 nursing facilities in seven states before starting her own business in 1988. Cat has attended numerous CMS (HCFA) surveyor training sessions and has held positions on a variety of CMS (HCFA) workgroups: i.e. development of the MDS/PAC short-stay forum, abuse and neglect forum, revision of the survey, and interpretative guidelines and QOL initiatives.

Cancellation Policy Cancellations must be made in writing and may be faxed or mailed to KAHCF. Cancellations by phone will not be accepted. Cancellations received no later than September 2nd will receive a full refund. Cancellations received between September 3rd and September 9th will receive a refund of 1/2. Registrants who do not attend or who do not complete the full seminar will not receive a refund unless prior written notice is given to the KAHCF office.
