KAHCF is offering this must-attend seminar at the Galt House Hotel & Suites in Louisville for all Long Term Care Facilities in Kentucky! The training is on Emergency Preparedness. After the recent weather events, this is the perfect time to attend and bring your staff members for this excellent opportunity to receive the necessary information to prepare for any type of hazard. The Kentucky All Hazard Long Term Care Planning and Resource Manual will be rolled out and made available to all facilities at this time. Also, training will be offered on the NIMS ICS (Incident Command System for Healthcare)-100, so that you can achieve compliance with federal HPP guidelines for preparedness funding eligibility.
Learning Objectives:
I. The Real Deal-When it Happens at your facility!
This session will give members of the long term care community an opportunity to share their experiences on how they have survived recent weather events and other serious hazards.
II. How does this relate to your local Emergency Response Network
Describe the role of Emergency Management in emergency preparations and response at the local, regional and state levels. Identify the key responders long term care administrators need to know to ensure the most effective response during an emergency. Also identify emergency preparedness funding opportunities for LTC.
III. Roll out the Kentucky All Hazard Long Term Care Plan and Resource Manual
The attendees will each receive a hard copy of the KY All Hazards LTC Planning and Resource Manual provided by the University of Kentucky. This session will review the list of the components of the KY All Hazards LTC Planning and Resource Manual. And describe how the KY All Hazards LTC Planning and Resource Manual can be used to enhance or create a plan that will meet CMS guidelines for their long term care facility.
IV. H1N1 Virus - Are you Ready?
This session will give an update on the statewide plan to address the expected outbreak of H1N1 flu this fall and discuss how Kentucky is handling current incidents and future threats of the H1N1 Influenza in the state.
V. NIMS ICS-100 Training
Gain knowledge of federal emergency response incident command system to be able to communicate with and respond more effectively to first responders in the event of a facility disaster/incident. Review the Long Term Care Emergency Readiness Training in Federal Emergency Preparedness (NIMS ICS100). And each attendee who completes the training will receive certification in NIMS ICS100 to achieve compliance with federal HPP guidelines for preparedness funding eligibility.
Presenters:
Arleen Johnson, PhD, is Director for the Kentucky Emergency Preparedness for Older Persons grant (Cabinet for Health & Family Services, Department of Public Health) and the 3-state Ohio Valley Appalachia Regional Geriatric Education Center at UK which provides training for health professionals, faculty and students. She has worked in the field of aging for over 35 years, and in 2003 helped to develop the national agenda for emergency preparedness for aging for the National Association of Geriatric Education Centers. She serves on the national GEC Collaborative for Geriatric Emergency Preparedness and Response, the KY Health and Medical Preparedness Advisory Committee, the KY Outreach and Information Network, and is a KY Medical Reserve Corps volunteer.
Betty Shiels, MSSW, LCSW is Co-project Director for the Kentucky Emergency Preparedness for Older Persons grant (Cabinet for Health & Family Services, Department of Public Health). She has developed curriculum for and delivered emergency preparedness training to long term care administrators/managers and community-based agencies serving seniors across the North central and Western counties in Kentucky. She is a member of the Region 6 HERA committee and LTC committee. She and Dr. Barber also Co-Direct the Ohio Valley Appalachia Regional Geriatric Education Center project to train health professionals in gerontology for the University of Louisville.
Rod Barber, PhD is Co-project Director for the Kentucky Emergency Preparedness for Older Persons grant (Cabinet for Health & Family Services, Department of Public Health). He has developed curriculum for and delivered emergency preparedness training to long term care administrators/managers and community-based agencies serving seniors across the North central and Western counties in Kentucky. He is also Co-Director of the Ohio Valley Appalachia Regional Geriatric Education Center project to train health professionals in gerontology for the University of Louisville.
Kraig Humbaugh, MD, serves as the Director of the Division of Epidemiology and Health Planning for the Kentucky Department for Public Health. Trained as a pediatrician, Dr. Humbaugh has worked in private practice, in addition to serving in academic and public health roles. He earned an undergraduate degree from Vanderbilt University, studied as a Fulbright Scholar at the University of Otago in New Zealand, received his medical degree from Yale University, and received a Master of Public Health degree from The Johns Hopkins University. His division is responsible for the control of communicable disease, disease surveillance and investigation, injury prevention and research, vital statistics and health data.
Ken Urlage, BS, is the Administrator for the River Valley Nursing Home in Alexandria, KY. Since 1973, he has been an Administrator of Hospitals and nursing care facilities -- profit and non-profit, multi-level and single level facilities, chain and single owned facilities -- from the largest to the smallest. Ken has served on the board of the Kentucky Association of Health Care facilities in one capacity or another for over 20 years. In 1991 he received the IRA O. WALLACE award for outstanding leadership, meritorious unselfish service, and dedication to the Long Term Care Industry, and in 1993 and 2008 he received the Administrator of the Year Award for the Northern Bluegrass region of KAHCF.
Amy Brown, LHNA, MSW, is the Administrator of Britthaven of Prospect. Since 2005, she has been responsible for the overall operation of this 100 bed skilled nursing facility. She serves as KAHCF Central District Director, Long Term Care Board Member for the Healthcare Emergency Response Association and Steering Committee Member for the Healthcare Emergency Response Association. She has received numerous professional recognitions including the 2009-2010 AHCA Future Leader of Long Term Care, and 2008 KAHCF Central District Administrator of the Year, where she assisted her facility in receiving the 2008 KAHCF Central District Innovative Program of the Year and Kentucky Region Winner for Best Practices.
Robin A. Chappell, RN, is the Director of Nursing for Haws Memorial Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Fulton, KY. Since graduating from nursing school in 1986, she has worked in various health care settings where she gained experience in cardiovascular surgery, critical care, home health, and long term care. She has served as Director of Nursing for the past ten years at Haws Memorial Nursing and Rehabilitation Center. Robin is currently pursuing her Masters Degree in Nursing. She is actively involved in the Hospital Preparedness Program for Region I in Kentucky and is a co-chair for the long term care subcommittee. Since 1986, she has worked in hospitals and nursing facilities.

KAHCF Cancellation Policy
Cancellations must be made in writing and may be faxed or mailed to KAHCF. Cancellations by phone will not be accepted. Cancellations received no later than October 5th will receive a full refund. Cancellations received between October 6th and October 12th will receive a refund of 1/2. Registrants who do not attend or who do not complete the full seminar will not receive a refund unless prior written notice is given to the KAHCF office.
