Description:
Taking Dementia Care from Ordinary to Extraordinary requires team effort to build an Active Living environment capable of nurturing a person’s physical, mental, spiritual and emotional well-being. Learning the life stories of those in our care helps accomplish these goals and opens the possibilities for providing personally meaningful interactions. A portion of this presentation sharply focuses on not only how to go about the process of recording past history, but also how to use information learned to enhance the present quality of life for our residents.

Other topics explored in this full day program include creativity and imagination within the realm of dementia care. When gentle guidance combines with a nurturing environment, people often are open to self-expression…free of inhibition and disapproving eyes. For those with dementia, creativity represents an area of freedom in which there is no right, wrong or absolute. No need exists for the skills or experiences of the past or the ability to plan for the future. Once residents experience the safety of creative expression, language often flows, and memory vaults may open.

This training will give you an avalanche of innovative ideas…learn non-standard methods of communication essential to building caring relationships with those who have dementia and your team of long term care professionals.

Topics include:
• How to meet the six major emotional needs of those with dementia
• The magic and simplicity of trigger/flash moments
• Becoming a detective; skills to observe, research and inquire
• The importance of and avenues for preserving life stories
• Engaging residents with generational sights and sounds
• Stimulating creative thinking as a team
• Creating Gifts of Time to C.O.N.N.E.C.T.
• Global creativity initiatives in the world of dementia care
• Making personal contributions to the Active Living environment

Presenters:
Mary Sharp is a veteran educator and founder of the The Edcon Group. For over 30 years she has specialized in creating activities and learning experiences that achieve major, positive results.

Mary’s work took a dramatic turn in 1995 when her mother had multiple strokes resulting in advanced vascular dementia. The intense love for her mother and genuine interest in the condition steered her to a new career.

Now she teaches families and health care professionals how to build Active Living environments. She has dedicated her workshops and seminars to one central concept…those with dementia have basic emotional needs, and there are many ways to meet these needs while accommodating loss of words and memory. Mary has written dozens of articles and shown thousands how to effectively communicate and truly connect with those who have dementia.

Rachel Kail is the other half of The Edcon Group mother/daughter presentation team. While earning her degree in Psychology from the University of South Florida, career plans took a right turn when her grandmother’s dementia become more severe. She quickly adjusted her focus (seeking and receiving permission to engage in a self-directed study) and, as a student of dementia, found her passion.

For several years, Rachel has interviewed and learned from dementia care experts around the world. From that gathering of wisdom and her personal experiences, she shares insight that is “wise beyond her years.” On the platform, you see her skill, energy and humor. When she interacts with elders, you see her heart.
