Taking Dementia Care from Ordinary to Extraordinary02/25/2010 - 7:45am 02/25/2010 - 4:00pm Holiday Inn-Hurstbourne Hotel/I-64 Other topics explored in this full day program include creativity and imagination within the realm of dementia care. When gentle guidance combines with a nurturing environment, people often are open to self-expression…free of inhibition and disapproving eyes. For those with dementia, creativity represents an area of freedom in which there is no right, wrong or absolute. No need exists for the skills or experiences of the past or the ability to plan for the future. Once residents experience the safety of creative expression, language often flows, and memory vaults may open. This training will give you an avalanche of innovative ideas…learn non-standard methods of communication essential to building caring relationships with those who have dementia and your team of long term care professionals. Topics include: Presenters: Mary’s work took a dramatic turn in 1995 when her mother had multiple strokes resulting in advanced vascular dementia. The intense love for her mother and genuine interest in the condition steered her to a new career. Now she teaches families and health care professionals how to build Active Living environments. She has dedicated her workshops and seminars to one central concept…those with dementia have basic emotional needs, and there are many ways to meet these needs while accommodating loss of words and memory. Mary has written dozens of articles and shown thousands how to effectively communicate and truly connect with those who have dementia. Rachel Kail is the other half of The Edcon Group mother/daughter presentation team. While earning her degree in Psychology from the University of South Florida, career plans took a right turn when her grandmother’s dementia become more severe. She quickly adjusted her focus (seeking and receiving permission to engage in a self-directed study) and, as a student of dementia, found her passion. For several years, Rachel has interviewed and learned from dementia care experts around the world. From that gathering of wisdom and her personal experiences, she shares insight that is “wise beyond her years.” On the platform, you see her skill, energy and humor. When she interacts with elders, you see her heart. CEUs: Registration & Fees Lodging: KAHCF Cancellation Policy » |
