Infection Control in Long Term Care and F 441

Description:
This presentation provides the long term care team members with enough knowledge related to Infection control practices, prevention and transmission to assist in keeping their facilities environment as healthy as possible. With H1N1 and the influenza on the rise, we will also discuss flu transmission, symptoms and the latest updates from the Centers for Disease Control. We will review the top facility acquired illnesses, etiology and symptoms. In addition, we will discuss the revised F 441 Infection Control guidance to surveyors; it’s implications on your facility, your responsibilities, as well as what surveyors will be looking for. Developing a Systematic Approach to Wound Care

Description:
This presentation provides the long term care team members with basic knowledge related to wound care, prevention and identification. We will identify pressure ulcers and differentiation of other ulcers. We will discuss recognition, assessment of wounds, as well as best practices. The key elements of F 314 will be examined and what being in compliance with F 314 means. DO you have a wound care team? DO you have a process in place for skin at risk? Join us for this presentation to gain more knowledge about process management of wound care in facilities from identification, assessment to care planning and implementation.

Presenter:
Joy Jordan, RN, MSN, SMQT Certified, Clinical and Educational Consultant of Boyer and Associates, LLC, has more than 30 years of professional health industry experience.  Her areas of expertise include long-term care and sub acute operations, state and federal compliance programs, educational programs and performance improvement process development.

Prior to joining Boyer and Associates, Joy was a Federal Surveyor for Aschellon Corporation (contract position to Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services, CMS).  Her responsibilities there included comparative federal regulatory compliance surveys in long term care facilities.  Joy also worked for an Upper Wisconsin Technical college as a Nursing Program Instructor where she taught both first and second year students in the classroom content and clinical settings.  Joy has also been a corporate consultant for a national nursing home company, where her duties included regulatory compliance, training of nurse managers and implementing quality improvement systems.  Joy’s other experiences include:  Director of Nursing for 450 bed retirement community, Medicare manager of home health care agency, Education Coordinator, Cardiac nursing educator and has clinical experience in intensive care, emergency room and medical surgical nursing.
 
She received her B.S degree in Nursing from Illinois Wesleyan University in 1972 and her Master of Science of Nursing from Northern Illinois University in 1984.  She also has a certification of SMQT (Surveyor Minimum Qualification Test) in 2007.
 
Sharon A. Schott, RN and Clinical Nurse Consultant, has spent more than 30 years working in healthcare at many levels. These include Director of Nursing, Regional consultant, and clinical consultant for the Legal Department of a large multi-facility nursing home corporation. Sharon has also done work for private attorneys as a nurse expert. She is one of the original developers and facilitators of the Nurse Competency program sponsored by the American Health Care Association. In these roles, Sharon used the resident assessment process to improve resident outcomes. Sharon authored: "Legal Aspects of Documentation" for the AHIMA (American Heath Information Assoc.) national journal. In addition, she served on a national taskforce for AHIMA to assist in the development of documentation guidelines for long term care which is published on their website. Sharon has presented workshops on Customer Service for employees at both local and national levels. These workshops assist employees in dealing with problem families and/or residents and have been very well received. Presently, Sharon is assisting facilities in assessing nursing operations and accuracy of MDS coding to enhance case mix reimbursement.
