Be Serious...No Restraints...No Alarms...
No Citations... Really?

Friday, January 27, 2012

10:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m. (EST)

Description:
The use of restraints dates back to the 13th century and unfortunately continues today. In the most technologically advanced culture on earth, it is interesting that we continue to use these devices from long ago. Certainly there is increased awareness of the dangers of restraints and a growing belief that “there must be a better way.” But wait, how can falls and behavior be managed if restraints are totally out of the picture?

Continued reliance on external devices such as alarms, psychological restraints, and mats as “solutions” to falls beg the real question of what is the motivation for the resident’s moving? The problem only gets more challenging when the dimension of dementia is added to the mix.

However, the dementia does not preclude the resident’s desire to follow through on their wishes. Challenging behaviors often result from the clash of resident and staff desires. The goal then is for the health care providers to focus on the resident’s motivation and assist them in safely accomplishing their goal, not work at cross purposes to attempt to stop them from trying.

This session will focus on the depth of the person-centered assessment that must be completed prior to as well as after a resident falls. Employing the concept of person-centered care and integrating that information into everyday practice will make a difference in both the resident’s behaviors and their falls rate and negate the need for all restraints!

But knowing that restraints are not the best approach to the management of people is only half of the story. Convincing all staff and working with families must be done well if restraint use, both physical and psychological, it be truly a thing of the past.

This thought provoking, practical program will focus on the “who” of restraint freedom rather than the “what” while learning how to put the person back into the falls mitigation challenge.
